Independant Advocacy

The ethos of Breadalbane Academy is that each person is valued.

Purpose of Advocacy

The problems young people experience can overflow from school into local communities and vice-versa.   These problems can for example be bullying.

In sensitive areas there can be all kinds of perceptions and misunderstandings.   Occasions can occur where parents legitimately have concerns regarding the action(s) the school has taken regarding their son/daughter and the school’s efforts to resolve the problem.   In some circumstances parents may find it helpful to have someone local to whom they can turn.   Advocates will seek to listen, understand, and support the parent to make their position known to the school.   Advocates may also speak on behalf of those affected.    They will give independent, unbiased advice and support.   Advocates will help represent the views of parents and will not put forward their own views.

Procedure

Parents should normally try to resolve matters directly with the school in the first place, but if parents feel that they need support from the outset, then they should contact an advocate of their choice.

In the event of ongoing problems either the family or the school may also decide to contact an advocate.   Advocates should be contacted by letter or phone initially.   For a face to face chat, an appointment should be arranged.

Advocates will treat all matters in the strictest confidence.   However if there is a question of serious risk to a child, or any other person, responsibility for him/her would over-ride confidentiality and appropriate contact would be made.

Under this scheme, Advocates will not become involved in complaints against members of staff.   Any such matter should be raised directly with the school or local authority.   The contact numbers are to be found in this leaflet.
