Higher Applications of Mathematics 
What are the main aims of this course? 

 

To enable learners to develop mathematical, statistical and financial skills for everyday life and professional workplace at a Higher Level. 

¨ develop candidates’ financial literacy in real-life contexts  

¨ show candidates how they can use appropriate digital technology to manipulate and model mathematical, statistical and financial information  

¨ develop candidates’ mathematical reasoning skills so that they can generalise, build arguments, draw logical conclusions, assess risk, and make informed decisions in familiar and unfamiliar situations  

¨ develop candidates’ range of mathematical skills so that they can analyse, interpret and present data and numerical information  

¨ provide candidates with the skills to appraise quantitative information critically, considering modelling or statistical assumptions 

 

What entry requirements are needed to study this course? 

  • An A or B pass at National 5 applications of mathematics is recommended. 
What content is included in this course? 

Three main areas:- 

 

  • Mathematical Modelling 
  • Statistics and probability 
  • Finance

How will I be assessed on this course? 

  • project coursework 30 marks – 8 hours to complete project under exam conditions in school on days and times agreed with the school 
  • examination 65 marks – 2 hours and 5 minutes  
What are the homework and independent study requirements for this course? 

Homework will be linked to coursework and will be focused on supporting timely completion of each of the mandatory three areas.   Research tasks as well as media experimentation will be included within these tasks to support independent progression.
