What are the main aims of this course? 

The National Progression Awards in Photography will develop knowledge and understanding in practical photography. The Awards are aimed at those who want to explore their interest in photography and perhaps take it to a more advanced level. 

What entry requirements are needed to study this course? 

It is advisable that Pupils have completed one of the following: 

  • S3 Art & Design (Achieved 3rd level Extending) 
  • S3 Photography (Achieved 3rd level Extending) 
  • National 5 Art and Design. 
  • NPA Art & Design 
What content is included in this course? 

  1. Understanding Photography – Technical skills and Exposure 
  1. Photographing People – Portraiture, Composition and Lighting 
  1. Photographing Places – Landscape, Composition and Using Perspective 
  1. Working with Photographs – Digital Editing, selection and presentation. 
What skills will I develop by studying this course? 

Pupils will develop understanding of photography in everyday use including: 

  • The creative processes involved within photography/creative media 
  • Developing basic knowledge and understanding of practical skills when working with photographs 
  • Understanding of how to create good images when photographing people and places 
  • Critical thinking skills 
How will I be assessed on this course? 

Each of the four units are internally marked against national Standards. 

There are no written question paper element to this course or external examinations. 

Assessment in ongoing throughout the year with specific deadlines to ensure steady progress through the practical, hands-on units of work. 

What are the homework and independent study requirements for this course? 

Homework will be linked to coursework and will be focused on supporting timely completion of each of the mandatory four units.   Research tasks as well as technical and creative photographic experimentation will be included within these tasks to support independent progression. 

What are the possible progression routes in school and beyond? 

  • Pupils can progress to Higher Photography 
  • Further training or Education in Photography/Art and Design . 
What are the possible career pathways this course would support? 

  • Photography Industry: Pupils can pursue careers in photography as photographers,                  photojournalists, or in related roles within the industry.  
  • Art and Design: The course can lead to further studies in art and design, allowing for careers in art, design, or related fields.  
  • Higher Education: Students can progress to higher education, such as art colleges or                universities, to further their studies in photography or related disciplines.  
  • Creative Digital Media: The course can also be beneficial for those interested in creative digital media, providing a solid foundation for a career in this field.
