Welcome to the Science Department

The Science faculty is one of the STEM subject departments at Breadalbane Academy and offers seven fully equipped, modern teaching laboratories. The labs are purpose built to meet the learning and teaching needs of the three main science disciplines of Biology, Chemistry and Physics.  Learning and teaching is supported by a senior technician.

We are proud to offer a vast array of courses at National level and through the Broad General Education. In S1 and S2, pupils follow an integrated science course with an interdisciplinary approach to learning. In S3, pupils can opt to study core classes in Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Environmental Science. All core subjects progress through to National 4 or National 5 in S4. In addition, pupils in S3 can select from a range of optional masterclasses including Astrobiology, Forensic Science and Animal Behaviour. Throughout senior phase, pupils can choose to study Biology, Chemistry and Physics at National 4/5, Higher and Advanced Higher level. Pupil uptake is exceptionally high across all science disciplines and levels. In addition, the department offers S6 pupils the opportunity to develop key skills, such as, project planning and management, useful for future studies or the world of work by undertaking the Scottish Science Baccalaureate.

The Science faculty has well established links with a range of partners in order to develop the young work force and allow progression to further / higher education or employment. The teachers in the department offer a vast selection of extra-curricular opportunities and wider achievement experiences.  Pupils also have an opportunity to work towards a Youth Achievement Award in Science through masterclasses in S3. The department actively encourages participation in national competitions and STEM related activities. Our curriculum is greatly enriched by visiting STEM ambassadors providing workshops and experiences out with the classroom. To support learning, regular homework is issued and constructive feedback provided. The faculty offers lunchtime study support to all pupils.  Continuous formative and summative assessments are used to track and monitor pupil progress. The Science faculty at Breadalbane Academy, in addition to Maths and Technology, are proud to be finalists in the STEM category of the 2018 Scottish Education Awards.
