Our School
Welcome to Breadalbane Academy, a vibrant all-through school serving pupils aged 2 to 18 and takes pride in delivering a rich and diverse wider curriculum that supports the development of the whole child—academically, socially, and emotionally. Our approach is rooted in fostering creativity, resilience, and personal growth, ensuring every learner is equipped for life beyond school.
Opened in 2010, Breadalbane Academy is located in Aberfeldy, amidst the scenic Highland Perthshire mountains. Our wide catchment area spans from the dramatic wilderness of Rannoch Moor in the west to the lively towns of Dunkeld and Pitlochry in the east.
We aim to offer a rich set of experiences in line with the national Curriculum for Excellence, both within the classroom and beyond it. These include courses designed to meet the needs of all learners, whether academic or vocational; as well as a broad range of wider achievement activities for all as a part of our ‘Breadalbane Guarantee’.
The school has a Gaelic Medium Education (GME) provision which ranges from Nursery to Senior Phase. Our most recent development was our Gaelic Nursery – the first in Perth and Kinross – which opened in April 2021. We have two GME classes in Primary, composited as P1 to P3 and P4 to P7.
All pupils from P1 to S1 experience Gaelic for Learners, with pupils in S3 and beyond able to opt to continue on to courses leading to SQA certification in Gaelic for Learners and the SQA qualification for fluent speakers: Gàidhlig. More information on our GME provision can be found here.
So, as well as acquiring a range of formal qualifications, all our young people are guaranteed additional activities which include: hillwalking, skiing, white-water rafting; trips to employers, expeditions to sites of historical interest; visits to parliament and theatre experiences. Increasingly, we are building such activities into the fabric of what we do, so that parents may be certain that in addition to a robust taught curriculum, our young people will be guaranteed a varied and valuable wider achievement experience.
We believe that in doing this we are creating a very special experience for our young people which is painted on the very broadest of educational canvasses.
The key to high achievement in schools is pupil motivation. By creating a curriculum that both stimulates and challenges within an environment of positive relationships and high expectations, we aim to get the very best out of our young people. This has been recognised in a range of ways: the school was one of three finalists in the Scottish Education Awards STEM category in 2018 and in the Learner Pathways category in 2020. Additionally, our work in developing employability skills has been used to exemplify good practice on the national Education Scotland website; and our sector-leading outdoor learning programme was featured on the BBC’s “Adventure Show”.
As a school, we strive to be excellent and want all of our young people to have this same ambition for themselves.
Together, we can do great things.
